Cadeau de Noël pour la guilde - Christmas gift to our guild

Couple of samples woven for a future rug project to use up a fair lot of synthetic commercial carpet yarn shared by one of our weaving guild members.

Second part of the sampler, woven without the fine threads (also cut off from the warp). The cloth has a smoother drape and softer colours.

I would add fine threads for weaving upholstery or any other kind of stiffer fabric but not for anything that needs to remain soft.

I was unable to find any more thread of the same colour so I unrolled and cut the warp in halves. The procedure was difficult but it worked out alright.

The set is closer on this second sample. I'm pleased with it. The use of a additional finer dark thread in a canvas interlacing adds stability, body and underlines the cloth interlacings. But it makes it stiffer than basket weave. The idea was to build a cloth that has a dark background onto which the thick coloured thread would stand out. I used too fine of a dark thread to obtain this result.

The double warp thread pass is woven with two shuttles to prevent systematic adjacent same colour threads on one side of the cloth and non matching borders (refer to the first sample). I still have to work on getting rid of this dark line along the selvage.

Last week I found an eight shafts Finnish sampling loom for sale within an hour drive from home. Afraid of missing the opportunity, I drove in the storm to go pick it up. It's been a real pleasure to meet Norma!

Sunday, I wound a first 4 yards short warp and dressed up the loom.

I planned for an eight inches wide scaft, reduced to six when treading and the sett is still too open. To avoid ending up with a four inches wide scarf, I'll need to unweave, untie and unroll, double up the warp width and start over again. This is is what sampling is all about, no?
